Stone Town Council is hosting a special day of remembrance to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The community is invited to gather in a poignant act of remembrance on Thursday 8th May to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who lived through and fought in the Second World War.

This free public event will begin at 8:30pm at the War Memorial, located at the top of Stone High Street. Attendees will experience a moving evening of reflection and unity, featuring performances by the Florence Brass Band and the Stone Choral Society. A short commemorative service will follow, the laying of a wreath and a shared moment of remembrance.

At 9:30pm, the Town will then join the national tribute with the lighting of a Beacon, a powerful symbol of peace and resilience, aligned with commemorations taking place across the UK.

In addition to the evening’s event, the Stone Heritage Centre will be hosting a special VE Day Exhibition, open from 11:00am to 9:30pm on the same day. The exhibition will offer visitors a chance to explore Stone’s wartime history and the stories of those who contributed to the national effort. Entry is free, and no booking is required.

A Stone Town Council spokesperson said: "This special day of remembrance offers an opportunity for the community to reflect, learn, and come together in honour of a defining moment in history."
