Council Launches Parkinson's Exercise Programme

Residents diagnosed with Parkinson’s can improve their health and overall well-being thanks to a new specialist referral scheme.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is launching a 12-week exercise programme at Jubilee2 from Monday, 7 April featuring group classes and individual, gym-based sessions designed to ease symptoms of the progressive neurological condition – including shaking, slow movements and stiffness – while boosting physical and mental health.

The subsidised programme is being delivered by the borough council over a 40-week period thanks to an activity grant from Parkinson’s UK, a charity aiming to find a cure while improving the quality of life for people affected.

Lucy Taylor, Sports and Events Manager, said: “The council is pleased to offer this new referral scheme, thanks to funding from Parkinson’s UK, following the success of a similar initiative. This programme features circuits and spinning, as well as wellness hub sessions, where our trained instructors will guide people of all abilities on how to exercise safely and effectively to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It also includes access to the gym and swimming pool at Jubilee2.

“Being active for 2.5 hours a week is shown to help manage Parkinson’s symptoms while having a positive impact on overall health and mood. Exercises focus on core stability, balance, mobility, co-ordination and flexibility – things that can be affected by the condition.

“Our wellness hub sessions are a great way to socialise with others while using our specialist exercise machines. These help to support postural improvements, work upper and lower limbs together, improve balance and increase flexibility, with sessions taking place during the week and at the weekend.”

A 12-week programme costs £32.05 or is free in some cases. The scheme is open to self-referrals, and referrals from health professionals, via an online application form. For more information, please contact Jubilee2 on 01782 616606 or e-mail J2Active@newcastle-staffs.gov.uk.

Roma Hashim, Physical Activity Grants Manager at Parkinson's UK, added:

“We are delighted to fund this new referral scheme and enable people in the Newcastle-under-Lyme area to access these new sessions. Being active is one of the best ways to manage Parkinson’s symptoms, as regular physical activity can improve both long-term physical and mental well-being. Plus, group activities offer great social opportunities for people with Parkinson’s to enjoy.”
